Halobacillus, renowned for their remarkable metabolic diversity, thrive in saline and high-salt environments, making them a fascinating subject of study. These adaptable organisms are commonly found in extreme habitats, including saline waters, salt mines, salt-rich soils, and high-salinity foods. Their ecological versatility and beneficial properties—such as the synthesis of alkaline enzymes, bioremediation potential, and production of bioactive small molecules—have sparked growing interest. The genome of Halobacillus encodes a vast array of natural products and enzymes, many of which hold significant promise for biotechnological applications. This review explores Halobacillus as a rich source of both natural products and enzymes, offering a comprehensive overview of its taxonomy, comparative genomics, and ecological diversity. We present a detailed analysis of the natural products isolated from Halobacillus, discussing their biosynthesis, bioactivity, mechanisms of action, and the geographical origins of their producers. Additionally, we delve into the production of alkaline enzymes, examining both novel and well-characterized variants, alongside the optimal conditions for their synthesis. The growing availability of public genomic databases for Halobacillus offers an exciting opportunity to unlock the full potential of this genus, paving the way for the discovery of novel natural products with diverse applications.
