„Exzellenz“ in der gefäßmedizinischen Forschung – Ein Einstieg in das Thema
摘要
This article explores the concept of “excellence” in vascular medical research and provides a comprehensive introduction to academic career paths in Germany. High-level research is characterized not as a solitary achievement but as the result of interprofessional collaboration, robust networking and professional infrastructure. The traditional scientific trajectory typically commences with a doctoral degree (Dr. med.) and progresses through the habilitation to a professorship, although individual paths remain highly diverse due to varying university regulations and clinical demands. The scope of research encompasses basic science, clinical translational projects and increasingly relevant health services research and epidemiology. Scientific success is frequently quantified using metrics such as the Journal Impact Factor and the h‑index, with an h‑index of 40 after 20 years of research activity representing excellence within the field. Despite the challenges of balancing research with clinical duties, the authors emphasize that academic engagement is vital for the future of vascular surgery. Pursuing a scientific career not only enhances individual leadership and methodological skills but also promotes the visibility required to shape healthcare policy and professional standards. The German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG) actively supports researchers through its various committees and the German Institute for Vascular Healthcare Research (DIGG).
