Versorgungsrealität des vaskulären Traumas in Deutschland

The present survey on treatment reality of vascular trauma in Germany is a follow-up survey to the first survey carried out in 2022.

From 11 July 2025 to 27 August 2025 all members of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG) were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey via SurveyMonkey®. The questionnaire covered structural features of the hospitals, case volumes, practical experiences and measures for continuing education carried out.

Out of 3120 members of the DGG 10.1% participated in the survey. The majority worked in an independent department of vascular surgery (69.4%) and in institutions with more than 200 beds (90.1%). Of the hospitals 77.6% were certified trauma centers. Most of the hospitals treated between 5 and 10 traumatic vascular injuries annually (34.3%). Of the respondents 71.5% have so far not undertaken any further education in the field of vascular traumatology.

The absolute number of participants in the survey was doubled in comparison to the previous survey but the percentage share remained nearly constant at 10.1% due to the increasing number of members of the DGG. The results obtained must be interpreted in the context of the low numbers of participants and the rarity of the entity. The statements made by the participants confirm that vascular surgery is the leading discipline in the treatment of traumatic vascular injuries in Germany. There is a need for training particularly in endovascular techniques for the treatment of vascular trauma. Coordinated continuing education programs and a stronger integration into concepts for disaster management appear to be necessary to be able to ensure the treatment of traumatic vascular injuries.
