<p>Despite the high prevalence both diabetes mellitus and diabetic foot syndrome are often diagnosed with a considerable delay. Diabetic foot syndrome represents a&#xa0;frequent and severe complication of diabetes mellitus but is still widely underestimated and insufficiently recognized. In addition to hyperglycemia, restricted arterial perfusion and peripheral polyneuropathy constitute major risk factors. As early stages of diabetic foot syndrome are typically asymptomatic, the disease progression tends to be insidious. The development of foot ulcers markedly increases the risk of both minor (toe or forefoot) and major (proximal to the ankle) amputations. Amputations not only severely impair patients’ quality of life but are also associated with increased mortality. Moreover, diabetic foot syndrome imposes a&#xa0;substantial socioeconomic burden on healthcare systems and society as a whole. Given these implications, emphasis must be placed on preventive strategies and early diagnosis. Effective management of diabetic foot syndrome necessitates interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment to address the multifactorial complexity of the condition. Current international guidelines advocate a&#xa0;stage-appropriate, interprofessional and multidisciplinary approach aimed at preventing amputations and reducing both morbidity and mortality. The effectiveness of interdisciplinary treatment teams in lowering amputation rates has been substantiated by numerous studies.</p>
