Background <p>Diabetes mellitus is one of the most frequent chronic diseases in Germany and is associated with a&#xa0;high risk of complications. An optimal treatment monitoring is essential to reduce the risk of diabetes-associated secondary diseases, especially for patients dependent on insulin. Modern technologies, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems enable an individualized treatment and can substantially improve the quality of life of patients. At the same time, technological progress represents a&#xa0;new challenge for the routine clinical practice.</p> Objective <p>The aim of this work is to present continuous glucose monitoring systems for treatment monitoring in diabetes mellitus and to evaluate their suitability for routine clinical practice.</p> Material and methods <p>For this review current studies, reviews and guidelines that address the use of digital monitoring systems in people with diabetes mellitus were evaluated and summarized.</p> Results <p>Modern monitoring systems enable improved glucose control. The time in range represents a&#xa0;promising progression parameter for the treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus. The treatment with insulin is safer due to the warning of hypoglycemia. The compatibility with insulin pumps enables automatic insulin dosing and thus paves the way for the “artificial pancreas”. At the same time, the rapid pace of technological change is a&#xa0;challenge for the integration into clinical processes.</p> Conclusion <p>The new digital technologies offer great potential for optimizing the treatment of people with diabetes mellitus. Concrete training concepts are essential to utilize the full benefits of the technological progress. In addition, further studies will be necessary to be able to evaluate the long-term benefits.</p>

Background

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most frequent chronic diseases in Germany and is associated with a high risk of complications. An optimal treatment monitoring is essential to reduce the risk of diabetes-associated secondary diseases, especially for patients dependent on insulin. Modern technologies, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems enable an individualized treatment and can substantially improve the quality of life of patients. At the same time, technological progress represents a new challenge for the routine clinical practice.

Objective

The aim of this work is to present continuous glucose monitoring systems for treatment monitoring in diabetes mellitus and to evaluate their suitability for routine clinical practice.

Material and methods
