Background and objective <p>Due to limited surgical training opportunities in vascular surgery training, there is a&#xa0;need for innovative teaching concepts. The present study therefore investigated the learning success of the use of virtual training units for the training of microsurgical techniques.</p> Material and methods <p>Within 11&#xa0;months 10&#xa0;participants took part in a&#xa0;standardized microsurgical training. Of the 10 participants 5 completed a&#xa0;virtual training (VT) module, five participants completed a&#xa0;classical theoretical learning unit with a&#xa0;senior vascular surgery instructor. This was followed by identical microsurgical training in the microsurgical wet lab. The short-term and medium-term learning success was then examined using three learning assessments (day&#xa0;1, week&#xa0;1, week&#xa0;4).</p> Results <p>The VT group showed a&#xa0;significantly (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) higher success rate (98.48%) in performing the practical exercise in the wet lab compared to the non-VT group (90.28%). When examining the short-term and medium-term learning success, the VT group repeated the learned content after 4&#xa0;weeks with a&#xa0;success rate of 95% compared to 82.5% in the non-VT group. No significant differences were found regarding the time required to carry out the practical exercises.</p> Conclusion <p>A&#xa0;possible positive influence of VT on the short-term and medium-term learning success of practical and theoretical contents was demonstrated. In the practical execution of the exercises, VT could have had a&#xa0;positive influence on the adherence to the correct surgical procedures.</p>

The short-term and medium-term learning success was then examined using three learning assessments (day 1, week 1, week 4).

Results

The VT group showed a significantly (p < 0.05) higher success rate (98.48%) in performing the practical exercise in the wet lab compared to the non-VT group (90.28%). When examining the short-term and medium-term learning success, the VT group repeated the learned content after 4 weeks with a success rate of 95% compared to 82.5% in the non-VT group. No significant differences were found regarding the time required to carry out the practical exercises.

Conclusion

A possible positive influence of VT on the short-term and medium-term learning success of practical and theoretical contents was demonstrated. In the practical execution of the exercises, VT could have had a positive influence on the adherence to the correct surgical procedures.
