Gefäßchirurgie in Deutschland: Eine Umfrage und Datenbankanalyse der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Gefäßchirurgie und Gefäßmedizin

The German hospital system faces comprehensive. An insight into local structures and performance data may help to guide future considerations.

This was a survey among members of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG) in leading positions in 2023. Furthermore, a retrospective analysis of quality assurance reports for German hospitals from the year 2022 was conducted.

In total, 136 responses were included (39% calculation hospitals, 47% certified DGG centers). Most respondents worked in independent departments (79%) as part of advanced care hospitals (57%, level II) vs. university hospitals (10%) and maximum care hospitals (15%). In median, the units comprised 27 hospital beds and 8 physicians with overall personnel costs of 1.5 million euro. The median case number was 895 among respondents of the survey vs. 684 in quality assurance reports for all departments of vascular surgery in Germany (6.9 physicians). The median annual case number per physician was 102 vs. 98. The overall annual costs of 3.01 million euro and the overall reimbursement of 5.95 million euro summed up to a positive margin of 933,100 euro per participating organization unit.

The current survey and analysis of quality assurance reports provided insights into benchmarking parameters to enable strategical planning in vascular surgery units. The data emphasize that vascular surgery departments, mostly advanced care hospitals, work cost efficiently.
