<p>The important role of the <i>mises en pratique</i>, or practical realisations for the definition of units, in the International System of Units (SI) is often overlooked. This short letter explains their significance together with the historical evolution and recent update of the <i>mise en pratique</i> for the definition of the mole. The features and changes in the most recent version that are significant and of interest for the chemical metrology community are discussed in more detail.</p>
