Worldwide, wells play a major role in groundwater extraction. Their design should focus on minimizing inflow losses and thus energy consumption. The well screen plays a major role in a water well, but has to fulfil several conflicting roles at the same time. The screen should have a very high hydraulic conductivity but also must be able to retain the grains of the gravel pack. Both calculation methods and experimental investigations agree that most well screens, compared to other components of the well, have a very high hydraulic conductivity and contribute little to the total head losses. Wells incrusted with mineral precipitates retain these positive properties almost until their complete blockage.
