摘要

Numerical models are an important tool for conducting safety assessments in the context of the German Site Selection procedure for a high-level radioactive waste repository. The range of applications includes questions related to, for example, the thermal design of the repository or the potential leakage of radionuclides from the geosphere.

Numerical models are used successfully in many areas. However, their applicability has limits. It is therefore of crucial importance to understand and consider the opportunities and limits of such models.

Selection and design of suitable, meaningful models is a complex task and can only be done for a particular case, as there is no one size fits all solution. Nonetheless, some guiding principles exist that are of importance in practice. We describe some of these principles and critically evaluate their applicability and limitations.
