摘要

Background

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based interventions are becoming increasingly commonplace in everyday oncology practice. While the use of AI offers new opportunities for treating psychological symptoms in patients with cancer, it must be used responsibly.

Objective

This paper aims to provide a narrative overview of AI-based interventions for alleviating psychological distress in cancer patients, discussing their potential benefits and implications.

Materials and methods

A narrative literature search was conducted. The inclusion criteria were based on the PICO scheme: (P) cancer patients or survivors; (I) the intervention uses AI; (C) all comparison groups and study designs; and (O) distress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, fear of progression, and pain.

Results

The 13 included studies showed three areas of application: (1) language-based support systems (e.g., chatbots and voice assistance systems), (2) app-based interventions, and (3) systems for symptom recording and survivorship care. Most studies indicate the feasibility of AI interventions and provide initial evidence of their effectiveness in reducing psychological distress and improving health-related quality of life. However, the available studies provide only limited robust evidence.

Conclusion

In the future, AI-based interventions could be used in various fields of psycho-oncology as a supplement to personal interactions. However, the current empirical evidence is insufficient to allow robust conclusions to be drawn regarding their effectiveness or health economic implications. Responsible use requires transparency and, even more so, human engagement.
