Background <p>In uro-oncological diseases such as prostate cancer and urothelial carcinoma, multimodal treatment concepts combining radiation and systemic therapy are frequently applied. These approaches often lead to radiogenic side effects in the pelvis and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathies (CIPN). Complementary and integrative medicine is increasingly used to alleviate therapy-related toxicities.</p> Methods <p>Based on current German S3&#xa0;guidelines and published clinical studies, complementary and integrative approaches for managing radiogenic adverse effects and CIPN were reviewed and evaluated for evidence and clinical relevance.</p> Results <p>For radiogenic proctitis, enteritis, and cystitis, amifostine, probiotic combinations, and selenium showed beneficial effects, while Aloe vera may provide symptom relief. Cranberries are not recommended due to negative trial results. In CIPN, functional training and cryotherapy appear effective in prevention. Acupuncture and topical phytotherapeutics such as menthol, capsaicin, or <i>Nigella sativa</i> can reduce neuropathic pain. Vitamin&#xa0;E and carnitine are not indicated due to lack of efficacy.</p> Conclusion <p>Complementary approaches can meaningfully contribute to alleviating therapy-related adverse effects. Their evidence-based integration into supportive oncology may improve quality of life and treatment tolerance in cancer patients.</p>

Background

In uro-oncological diseases such as prostate cancer and urothelial carcinoma, multimodal treatment concepts combining radiation and systemic therapy are frequently applied. These approaches often lead to radiogenic side effects in the pelvis and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathies (CIPN). Complementary and integrative medicine is increasingly used to alleviate therapy-related toxicities.

Methods

Based on current German S3 guidelines and published clinical studies, complementary and integrative approaches for managing radiogenic adverse effects and CIPN were reviewed and evaluated for evidence and clinical relevance.

Results
