Background <p>Robotic surgery has developed rapidly in recent decades. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are becoming increasingly important as they provide insights into quality of life and functionality from the patient’s perspective. Their use varies greatly depending on surgical technique and specialty.</p> Objective <p>This article examines the role of PROs in robotic surgery using robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and robotic-assisted breast surgery (RABS).</p> Materials and methods <p>This article is based on a&#xa0;systematic literature search in MEDLINE and analyzes original studies on PROs in RARP and RABS. Methodological approaches, areas of application and PRO instruments are compared.</p> Results <p>The search yielded 236 hits for RARP (101 included) and 19&#xa0;hits for RABS (6&#xa0;included). RARP shows superior results for early continence and potency compared to open surgery. Standardized instruments such as Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite Short Form with 26&#xa0;Items (EPIC-26) and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) are established, and PROs are also used in prognostic models and monitoring applications. RABS, on the other hand, is still experimental; studies focus on technical feasibility and cosmetic results with PROs having so far played a&#xa0;subordinate role.</p> Conclusion <p>PROs are often only used in the later development phases of a&#xa0;procedure. In order to recognize patient-centered advantages at an early stage, they should already be integrated into the innovation phase of surgical techniques. While RARP shows the diverse application of PROs, RABS offers the opportunity to consider PROs at an early stage and promote patient-centered innovation.</p>

Background

Objective

This article examines the role of PROs in robotic surgery using robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and robotic-assisted breast surgery (RABS).
