摘要

Background

Surgical therapy of metastases is becoming increasingly important in the treatment of visceral tumors (especially liver metastases). Advances in the individual processing of tumors using biomarkers are paving the way for precision medicine in the context of metastasis surgery.

Objective

The aim was to review the current literature on the importance of precision medicine in the surgical treatment of metastases from visceral tumors, especially from colorectal carcinoma.

Materials and methods

A literature search was performed for current studies on precision medicine and metastasis surgery, with special regard to biomarkers, artificial intelligence (AI), and other innovations, and the studies were discussed in context.

Results

The individual characterization of tumors using biomarkers as well as the use of AI and modern surgical procedures can help to guide treatment decisions and risk–benefit assessments for the individual patient.

Conclusion

In the future, the indication for surgical treatment of metastases must not only be based on technical operability but also be made in conjunction with the individual tumor biology.
