Metastatic breast cancer represents a complex multidimensional challenge for breast cancer patients. The aim of oncological treatment is in most cases no longer cure, but rather to delay disease progression and maintain or improve the quality of life of the patient. Advances in cancer research and personalized medicine offer hope and increasingly enable individual treatment strategies. Care and support for cancer patients and their caregivers beyond medical treatment is of great importance in order to ensure the best possible quality of life despite metastatic disease. Social support and financial security play a decisive role in coping with daily life with the disease.

This article provides an overview of various medical and psychosocial aspects which influence the quality of life of cancer patients.

The work is based on reader surveys of the breast cancer breast cancer magazine Mamma Mia!, experiences gained by the author in her 20 years of acting as a patient representative, and consideration of selected patient-relevant studies.

Care of persons with metastatic breast cancer requires joint efforts in medical, scientific, and social fields. An interdisciplinary and interprofessional care approach is essential for maintaining the best possible quality of life for those affected.
