The number of cancer diagnoses and, as a result, the amount of radiological imaging has increased significantly in recent years.
ObjectiveThis article aims to provide an overview of potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in oncologic radiology and radiation therapy.
Materials and methodsPresented are AI applications in the diagnosis and treatment of breast, lung, prostate, liver, and thyroid tumor diseases.
ResultsMany AI models are comparably competent to radiologists regarding the classification or segmentation of tumors. Radiologists’ accuracy can be significantly enhanced through AI-assisted reporting. Moreover, there are models that can provide reliable predictions on tumor progression, treatment-associated adverse effects of radiation, or overall survival.
ConclusionAI offers significant potential to enhance the clinical workflow in radiology and radiation therapy. However, it should be regarded as a complement to human expertise rather than a replacement. It is crucial that medical professionals using AI are comprehensively trained in the capabilities and limitations of these technologies.
