摘要

Gender-affirming medical interventions enable trans and gender-diverse individuals to achieve physical alignment with their experienced gender identity and contribute significantly to improved quality of life. In Austria, penile inversion vaginoplasty represents the standard technique in feminizing genital surgery. This procedure allows for aesthetically and functionally satisfactory reconstruction of the external female genitalia and the creation of a neovagina. In addition to this classical method, alternative techniques such as peritoneal or sigmoid colon vaginoplasty are gaining importance, particularly in cases of limited tissue availability or revision surgery. Despite technical advances and overall high satisfaction rates, structural challenges in the medical care of gender-diverse individuals persist: limited access to specialized centers and long waiting times lead to considerable distress. Moreover, gender-diverse individuals continue to face discrimination in healthcare settings, often due to a lack of knowledge and sensitivity among medical professionals. Therefore, stronger integration of gender-affirming medicine into medical education and training, as well as an increase in available resources, are essential to ensure equitable, competent, and timely healthcare free from discrimination.
