摘要

The year 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mann’s birth (6 June 1875) and the 50th anniversary of his death (12 August 1955). Illness, dying, and death are frequent themes in his novellas and novels. His works contain medico-literary content, illustrated by references to Buddenbrooks, Death in Venice, The Magic Mountain, Doctor Faustus, and The Black Swan. Thomas Mann does not address illness in the clinical sense, but rather the poetic interpretation of meaning, with the physical suffering of his characters following the poetic laws of the respective work. His concept of health in his texts will also be discussed. Thomas Mann’s medical history, presented from the perspective of the unity of life and work, additionally illustrates how the great artist was able to maintain his creative power as a writer despite numerous impairments to his well-being, his lung surgery, and his later physical and mental exhaustion.
