Smart Hospital

The topic of patient safety has gained importance in recent decades, especially since the report “To err is human” in 1999. Studies show that the error rate in healthcare is higher than previously assumed, with medication errors, mix-ups, and communication errors occurring very frequently. Before the pandemic, most projects were of analogue nature, leading to the development of various paper-based measures such as checklists or scores. However, since 2020, the focus has increasingly shifted towards digital solutions, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The term “smart hospital” was since then mostly associated with digital solutions, but it represents a combination of digitization and the adaptation of traditional workflows. To illustrate the topic of digitization in combination with possibilities of AI, a concrete example, i.e., the risk of a medication error, will be discussed. Medication errors are a central issue; overdosing or underdosing, as well as incorrect or missing medications, occur frequently, and worldwide, whereby approximately 7000 people die each year due to illegible handwriting alone. Digital solutions can significantly reduce the error rate in the medication process. A research project at the Medical University of Graz is investigating how AI can contribute to optimizing the medication process. The advantages of digital systems include reducing errors and relieving staff. Technological innovations is associated with opportunities and challenges. Through digitization and AI, the safety of patients and staff can undoubtedly be enhanced.
