摘要

Fatigue can occur in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) as early as the prodromal phase of MS and later in any stage of the disease, with a prevalence of 90%. Therefore, a thorough medical history should be taken to exclude secondary causes of fatigue on the one hand and to accurately classify fatigue using standardized questionnaires on the other. Essentially, both nonpharmacological and pharmacological measures are available for the treatment of fatigue. Nonpharmacological approaches include psychoeducational methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness and attention training, cooling techniques, or physical exercise. Although no medication is officially approved for the treatment of fatigue in MS, in individual cases, a therapeutic trial with amantadine, modafinil or fampridine may be considered. If depressive symptoms are also prominent, antidepressants (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) can be used as an additional treatment.
