Besides psychosocial and psychotherapeutic support, psychopharmacological medication is also available for the treatment of alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Despite approval and evidence of effective support for maintaining abstinence from alcohol, these treatment options are often offered late, when secondary diseases, particularly alcohol-associated liver disease, have already occurred, or sometimes not at all. This can further complicate the management of AUDs. Possible causes of the delayed use of psychotropic drugs in this context include a lack of knowledge and stigmatization among medical staff. Hence, this work is intended to provide an overview of important aspects of multidisciplinary and integrative care for AUDs.
