<p>In this communication, an efficient, simple, recyclable, reusable, and eco-friendly imidazolium-based bi-functionalized ionic liquid catalyst (0.1&#xa0;mol%) was used to promote the Biginelli reaction at 40&#xa0;°C under neat conditions. The advantages of this synthetic techniques show the aids of a high productivity/broad substrate scope, suitable operation, short reaction time, environmentally benign, and high TON/TOF along with low catalyst loading. Also, a possible multicomponent reaction mechanism was proposed based on the Knoevenagel reaction using bi-functionalized ionic liquid. The latter was recycled/reused up to eight cycles along with no significant damage of the yield and its catalytic efficiency.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
