<p>Accurate characterization of groundwater droughts is critical for efficiently managing groundwater resources at multiple scales. Over the past years, most of the research has been focused on analyzing propagation characteristics from meteorological droughts to groundwater droughts; however, a clear understanding of the internal propagation of groundwater droughts at the regional scale is lacking. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the internal propagation of groundwater droughts and analyze various drought characteristics at a regional scale in Andhra Pradesh state. From this study, we tried to understand the groundwater drought propagation speeds and the relation between groundwater drought characteristics across three different regions in Andhra Pradesh. Nonparametric Standardized Groundwater Index (SGI) and Groundwater Drought Instantaneous Propagation Speed (GDIPS) are used to study groundwater drought characteristics and internal propagation dynamics. Our results indicate that groundwater drought internal propagation characteristics are highly spatially variable, and even high-rainfall regions are susceptible to prolonged groundwater droughts. Groundwater droughts in the study area are characterized as mild to moderately frequent. Drought Recovery Duration (DRD) influences the cyclic nature of groundwater time series in most districts of the study region. This study helps understand the groundwater drought internal propagation mechanism and effectively manage groundwater resources from overexploitation.</p>
