Synoptic analysis of cyclone Ianos based on surface and satellite observations and high-resolution reanalysis data

Cyclone Ianos formed in the Central Mediterranean and reached at least category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale before making landfall in Greece. The storm was unique since its precursor was not a frontal extratropical cyclone like most of the medicanes, it developed as a weak surface low-pressure area associated with a nearby upper-level low and rapidly became a warm-core system with persistent convection. This study presents an analysis of the cyclone’s life cycle based on surface wind, pressure and precipitation observations from land and sea, satellite-based active and passive microwave measurements from polar-orbiting satellites and ERA5 reanalysis data, focusing on parameters that differ between tropical and non-tropical cyclones. These data confirmed that the cyclone can be described as a tropical cyclone (hurricane) based on the persistence of a deep and symmetrical warm core, deep convection, well-defined upper-level outflow and a symmetrical, dense wind field with hurricane-force winds.
