<p>This study presents an analysis of drought development on the island of Vis, Croatia, using the New Drought Index (NDI) over the period from 1956 to 2022, with a specific focus on the Komiža meteorological station. The NDI is a composite index that integrates precipitation, soil moisture, and vegetation health, offering a more holistic view of drought compared to traditional indices. Concurrently, it examines annual sea temperature trends from 1991 to 2022. The research, conducted on annual and monthly time scales, reveals that while annual precipitation trends did not show significant decreases, both mean annual air and sea temperatures exhibited statistically significant rising trends, with a notable increase in air temperatures beginning in 1992. The NDI analysis over 67 years identifies six distinct sub-periods characterized by alternating dry and wet episodes. It was observed that droughts post-1982 were more severe than those in earlier periods, with the most intense droughts occurring between 2015 and 2022. Monthly analysis indicates a higher frequency of droughts during the summer months (June to August). The findings suggest an increasing frequency and intensity of droughts not only on the island of Vis but potentially across numerous small Mediterranean islands, attributed to escalating air and sea temperatures.</p>
