Trends in endemic plant research under climate change scenarios: a bibliometric analysis (1990–2025)

Climate change represents one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century, with significant impacts on biodiversity, especially on endemic species due to their restricted habitats and high ecological specialization. Species Distribution Models (SDMs) have become key tools for understanding the effects of climate change on these species and the design of conservation strategies. This bibliometric analysis, covering the period 1990 to 2025, provides insight into global research trends on endemic plants, SDMs and climate change, using a set of 4,821 documents from Web of Science and Scopus, chosen using inclusion/exclusion criteria based on thematic linkage, elimination of duplicates, document type and language. Specialized tools such as VosViewer v1.6.19.0 and the Bibliometrix package of the R programming language, in the RStudio environment, were used to perform the analyses. The study identifies three key phases in the evolution of research: gradual growth since 1999, a notable increase after 2006, a peak in 2017 and new growth since 2019. The research highlights authors such as Antoine Guisan and institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of California. It highlights the need for greater inclusion in global research efforts. Keyword analysis highlights climate change as a central theme, with a strong focus on species distribution models, conservation and biodiversity.
