<p>Precipitation in Iraq is highly variable spatially and temporally. Assessing climatic risks, such as droughts and floods, requires an understanding of precipitation concentration and seasonality. This study explores Iraqi precipitation patterns by utilizing the Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) and the Relative Seasonality Index (SI). For this, monthly precipitation data from 21 climate stations from 1940 to 2022 are used. The results indicate significant spatial variation in precipitation concentration across the country. Based on the PCI values, Iraq can be divided into three zones: a strongly irregular concentration in the south; an irregular precipitation concentration in the central area, and a moderate precipitation concentration in the mountainous and undulating areas. Seasonality analysis revealed that there is generally increasing intensity of precipitation seasonality from the northeast to the south and southwest of Iraq. The lowest seasonality value is for northern and eastern Iraq. It is “rather seasonal with a shorter drier season”. In contrast, the southern and central parts of Iraq have a markedly seasonal climate with a long drier season. In the last two decades, the precipitation of Iraq has become more seasonal. An extreme seasonal pattern emerging where all annual precipitation is concentrated in one or two months, leaving the rest of the year dry. The correlation between the standard deviation values of PCI and SI and the stations latitudinal indicated that latitude explains 51% and 81% of precipitation seasonality and concentration, respectively.</p>
