摘要

Introduction: Taking care of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be challenging and stressful for parents. Affected parents need an adequate support network tailored to their needs. The aim of this qualitative study is to assess the caregiving experiences of parents and their needs for support services, and to explain potential solutions.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 mothers and 1 parental couple of children with ASD to collect data (n = 7). The sample was obtained with the support of a gatekeeper from the Autism Bern Society. A structured content analysis using Kuckartz and Rädiker [45] methodology was performed.

Results: Caring for children with ASD is demanding and changes the whole family’s life. Parents have central needs, including (1) professional information about autism, (2) a central contact person who can take over individual case management, (3) time for themselves, and (4) professionals with specific knowledge about autism.

Conclusion: Expansion or restructuring of support services is relevant. New models of care with a guarantee of a competent, central point of contact are essential. Advanced practice nurses can take holistic case management of families and work family-centered way to meet the needs of parents to a greater extent.
