Background <p>Ingestion of high-powered neodymium magnets in children is a&#xa0;growing concern, as it can cause severe gastrointestinal (GI) injuries including perforation, fistula formation, and sepsis.</p> Case presentation <p>We report a&#xa0;case of a&#xa0;22-month-old boy who ingested ten neodymium magnets and presented with abdominal distension and free intra-abdominal air. Imaging confirmed the presence of magnet ingestion. Emergency laparotomy revealed nine small bowel perforations and two mesenteric injuries. Surgical repair and vacuum-assisted peritoneal therapy were successfully performed. The child recovered following a&#xa0;14-day intensive care stay.</p> Conclusion <p>This case underscores the life-threatening consequences of multiple magnet ingestion in young children. Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention are essential. Preventive public health measures should be strengthened to limit access to such magnets.</p>

Background

Ingestion of high-powered neodymium magnets in children is a growing concern, as it can cause severe gastrointestinal (GI) injuries including perforation, fistula formation, and sepsis.

Case presentation

We report a case of a 22-month-old boy who ingested ten neodymium magnets and presented with abdominal distension and free intra-abdominal air. Imaging confirmed the presence of magnet ingestion. Emergency laparotomy revealed nine small bowel perforations and two mesenteric injuries. Surgical repair and vacuum-assisted peritoneal therapy were successfully performed. The child recovered following a 14-day intensive care stay.

Conclusion

This case underscores the life-threatening consequences of multiple magnet ingestion in young children. Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention are essential. Preventive public health measures should be strengthened to limit access to such magnets.
