摘要

Tumours of the spinal cord and vertebral column are rare in children and adolescents, but they may exert a high negative impact on patients.

Clinical presentation depends on the location of the tumour and the developmental stage of the child. Symptoms may fluctuate in severity, but a normal neurological examination does not exclude the diagnosis of a tumour. Persistent symptoms must be investigated further. Early diagnosis is crucial, as it can significantly improve both the functional outcome and the quality of life of affected children. If there is clinical suspicion, a MRI scan should urgently be performed. In younger children, anaesthesia may be required.

After diagnosis, immediate transfer to a specialised interdisciplinary centre is required, where comprehensive expertise for the care and treatment of these children and adolescents is concentrated.
