Novelties from the Amazon rainforest: Froesiochloa hopkinsiana, a new herbaceous bamboo from northern Brazil, and notes on the placement of this rare genus within Olyreae (Poaceae: Bambusoideae)

The Amazon rainforest is an important phytogeographic domain in Brazil, known to harbor the largest humid tropical forest in the world. However, this domain has seen the smallest increase in the number of new species discovered compared to the other Brazilian environments. Along with the Atlantic rainforest, the Amazon includes the highest diversity of bamboos in the Americas, especially herbaceous bamboos, members of the tribe Olyreae (Poaceae: Bambusoideae). During a review of herbaria in northern Brazil, we identified specimens of this group with a singular morphology, described here as the new species Froesiochloa hopkinsiana. This taxon is endemic to “terra firme” forests in the Amazonas state and displays contracted synflorescences; leaf blades with a curved apex, subcordate, and slightly asymmetric base; and a fully pilose female anthecium. We sequenced four regions of the plastid genome (ndhF, rpl32–trnL, trnD-trnT, and trnS–psbZ–trnG) for this species and other representatives of the tribe Olyreae, and phylogenetic analyses supported a sister relationship between F. hopkinsiana and F. boutelouoides, the only other species in the genus. Additionally, the placement of the rare genus Froesiochloa within Olyreae is discussed.
