Palynotaxonomy of species of Turnera (Turneraceae) occurring in Brazil

Passifloraceae s.l. includes three families (Turneraceae, Passifloraceae s.s., and Malesherbiaceae). Turneraceae comprises 14 genera and 233 species distributed in the Americas and Africa. Turnera is monophyletic and, the most representative genus of Turneraceae, with 130 species occurring in the Americas and only two in Africa. Turnera is divided into 11 series and three subseries, circumscribed based on phylogenetic and morphological data, mainly flower, fruit, and seed characters. This study aimed to perform the most comprehensive and representative pollen analysis for the genus, verifying whether palynology confirms the current infrageneric classification. The pollen grains of 36 species of the genus Turnera, distributed in 10 series, were analyzed. Pollen grains were examined, measured, and illustrated by using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen morphology was described in terms of shape, size, aperture, and exine ornamentation. Morphometric data were subjected to principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering. Examination revealed pollen grains arranged in monads, isopolar, medium or large in size, subprolate or prolate-spheroidal, with subtriangular or subcircular amb, small or very small polar area, 3-colporate, sexine is microreticulate or reticulate. In the studied sample of Turnera species, no characters exclusive to a series or genus were found. Thus, pollen data do not reflect lineage-based infrageneric classification.
