Failure Stages Characterization of Sandstone Under Uniaxial Compression Test Based on Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry

In this study, a novel method for analyzing the characteristics of sandstone failure stages under uniaxial compression test (UCT) is proposed and experimentally verified. A complete geotechnical experimental procedure based on optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is identified, which consist of fiber characteristic calibration, fiber coupling with rock specimens, and mechanical test analysis. In the experiment, five loop fibers, one helical fiber, as well as strain gauges were arranged on the surface of a standard sandstone specimen for measuring axial and radial strains. Strains measured by OFDR and strain gauges were shown to have similar dynamic trends consistent with the experimental process, yet the OFDR has the unique advantage of higher measurement accuracy and distributed panoramic measurements. Based on the distributed radial strain field, the strain response at different locations during sandstone failure proves the effect of rock inhomogeneity on rock damage. The strain concentration region coincides with the final crack morphology of the specimen, reflecting the development of potential damage regions at different rock failure stages. The OFDR system can simply and effectively provide more accurate distributed strain field information that reflects the characteristics of various stages of sandstone failure, which is valuable for the optimization of geotechnical laboratory measurement techniques.
