<p>To investigate the effect of vagotomy on duodenal-jejunal bypass (DJB) during the early postoperative period in a rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Nonobese T2DM rats were allocated to three groups: sham, DJB, and DJB with vagotomy. On postoperative day 1, oral glucose tolerance tests were performed, and changes in glucose transporter expression in the small intestine were evaluated. The expression of c-Fos, a nerve activation marker, was evaluated in the nucleus tractus solitarius. DJB surgery improves glucose tolerance and alters glucose transporter expression in the alimentary limb. However, these effects were not observed in the DJB surgery with vagotomy group. c-Fos expression was lower in the DJB with vagotomy group than in the DJB group. The results suggest that the effect of DJB surgery on the blood glucose levels in the very early postoperative period may be associated with the vagal nerve system.</p>
