Efficacy of Pistacia vera L. ethanolic extract in modulating oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Natural products are often good candidates for drug discovery, regardless of their source. Pistacia vera L. increases antioxidant capacity and guards against diabetic illnesses. The aim was to assess the potential of oral administration of Pistacia vera L. ethanolic fruit extract (PEE) in mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetic rats. Four groups of rats were created by randomly dividing the animals: (1) standard control group; (2) PEE group, administered an ethanolic extract of Pistacia vera L. along with a standard meal of rats (100 mg/kg/day); (3) STZ group, rats with diabetes served as the positive control group, and (4) STZ + PEE group, which included rats with diabetes given PEE (100 mg/kg/day). After 6 weeks, PEE therapy of diabetic rats resulted in a large increase in insulin, CAT, GPx, GSH, and SOD levels that were nearly equal to those of healthy animals and a marked reduction in glucose, TNF-α, IL1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, MDA, and NO. Likewise, insulin secretion increased when islet β-cells were evaluated by immunohistochemistry, indicating improved glycemic control and a final commitment of glucose to glycolysis. This behavior may be explained by the cells’ antioxidant and free radical scavenging systems. As a result, our findings aid in the potential characterization and creation of novel therapeutic agents that prevent diabetes.
