Oral neutrophils and cancer: a molecular battle in the oral cavity

Neutrophils play an important role in protecting the body from infections. Their migration and recruitment to the cancer site are orchestrated by the action of chemokines and cytokines released by cancer cells. After reaching the cancer site, these immune cells perform a dual function. On one side, they possess potent cytotoxic capabilities, releasing reactive oxygen species and proteolytic enzymes that can directly harm cancer cells. Conversely, adverse changes in these functions can also facilitate tumor proliferation by promoting angiogenesis and suppressing anti-tumor immune responses. Furthermore, the proximity of oral neutrophils to the cancer site suggests that their response to cancer may be more precise compared to peripheral neutrophils. Therefore, it is essential to understand the functional role of oral neutrophils within the context of oral cancer. Various processes behind the aberrant function of circulating neutrophils in the cancer environment are explained in this review article. Acquiring a deeper understanding of these molecular processes is essential to comprehend the battle between oral neutrophils and oral cancer that might help in the development of targeted therapies aimed at restoring or enhancing neutrophil anti-tumor activities.
