Background <p>Acarbose (ACA) is a known anti-type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) drug with side effects; however, reports indicated that plant foods could influence its potential. Intake of bitter gourd (BG) and bitter leaf (BL) has been reported to reduce hyperglycemia, but there are no reports of their combination with acarbose&#xa0;in the management of T2DM.</p> Purpose <p>This study focused on determining the consequences of BG and BL-inclusive diets (BGID and BLID) on the ACA-treated high-fat diets/streptozotocin-induced T2DM-rats.</p> Methods <p>BG and BL's phenolic and alkaloid constituents were analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC).</p> Results <p>Results revealed that diabetic rats fed with BGID/BLID plus ACA treatment had reduced glycemic levels, α-amylase, α-glucosidase, lipase, adenosine triphosphate hydrolysing enzyme, 5’-nucleotidase, and adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities, and lipid profiles, but improved liver, kidney, and pancreatic antioxidant status. However, 10% BGID plus ACA had a better effect, which could be linked to the increased phenolic content in BG leaves. However, it could be in synergy with the alkaloid or other phytoconstituents that could be present in the studied vegetables.</p> Conclusion <p>Conclusively, the combination of ACA with BGID/BLID had a positive consequence and safer therapeutic strategy for the holistic management of diabetes and its possible complications. Still, a clinical investigation should be conducted to strengthen these claims.</p>

Background
