Design of a compact band stop frequency selective surface for microwave applications

A compact band-stop frequency selective surface (FSS) of size 0.03λ0 × 0.03λ0 where λ0 is the free space wavelength operating at 1.1 GHz is proposed in this paper. The novelty of the proposed FSS is the miniaturization obtained by increasing the total electrical length of the FSS by a convoluted square loop dual layered structure interconnected by metallic plated through vias. The proposed band-stop FSS exhibits good angular stability and polarization insensitivity up to 60°. The prototype is fabricated and the measured results are in agreement with the simulation results. A shielding effectiveness (SE) of 26 dB is obtained at the target frequency. Applications of the proposed compact FSS includes wireless signal shielding applications, enhanced communication security by selective attenuation and intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS).
