<p>The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is one of the key challenges facing Austria. Currently, sewage sludge is disposed of in Austria both for energy recovery and material recycling. Sewage sludge contains significant amounts of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, the recovery of which is becoming increasingly important in terms of the circular economy. However, the pollutants contained in sewage sludge—including heavy metals, organic pollutants, microplastics and pharmaceutical residues—are increasingly becoming the focus of environmental and health policy debates. Even if legal limits are complied with, there is a&#xa0;risk of creeping soil accumulation, especially as there are currently no binding limits for substance groups such as PFAS or microplastics. Against this backdrop and in view of the mandatory thermal treatment and phosphorus recovery planned from 2033 onwards, the question arises as to the sense or nonsense of current and future disposal strategies in Austria.</p>

The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is one of the key challenges facing Austria. Currently, sewage sludge is disposed of in Austria both for energy recovery and material recycling. Sewage sludge contains significant amounts of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, the recovery of which is becoming increasingly important in terms of the circular economy.
