<p>Austria is pursuing ambitious goals in climate protection and resource conservation, which are also reflected in the ongoing development of its waste management system. Over the past years, several landfill bans have been gradually introduced to keep valuable materials within the recycling loop and to strengthen the circular economy. Examples of such materials include certain construction and demolition waste, such as plasterboards.</p><p>One of the next materials slated for a&#xa0;landfill ban is mineral wool waste, also known as man-made vitreous fibers (MMVF) waste. Starting in early 2027, the disposal of these materials in landfills will no longer be permitted. This group of materials is chemically and physically diverse and poses significant technical and health challenges due to its fibrous structure.</p><p>Currently, Austria lacks an industrially established process capable of fully managing the entire waste stream of mineral wool while addressing their potential hazards. This article provides an overview of recent developments in light of the upcoming landfill ban, shares findings from a&#xa0;survey conducted among Austrian collection and treatment facilities for mineral wool waste, and explores potential recycling options, including both closed-loop and open-loop processes. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities that could arise for Austria if technological innovation, logistical infrastructure, and political frameworks are successfully integrated.</p>
