Die Wirkung von Strömungslenkungen auf Sedimentationsprozesse in Retentionsbecken

In the Weinviertel region (Lower Austria), there are areas increasingly affected by heavy rainfall events due to the impacts of climate change. In some cases, these events lead to significant erosion of sediments from agricultural land. If the highly turbid waters reach the receiving waters, it can result in unwanted sediment deposits and, in some cases, even mudslides through villages, which must then be cleared at high effort and cost. With the aim of settling the washed away sediment as concentrated and localised as possible and thus finding a solution to this problem, a model test was carried out based on the idea of using existing flood retention basins in the Weinviertel region for optimised and, above all, controllable sedimentation processes. The model experiment analysed the key processes and defined influencing factors, such as the flow path through a basin, for targeted and optimized sedimentation. From these studies, it was concluded that sediment from agricultural land can be concentrated and deposited on a relatively small area. It is advantageous if the flow is directed in such a way that it must travel a long path through the basin.
