Aktives Management von Feinsediment bei Wasserkraftanlagen und Erhaltung von Wasserstraßen – Grundlagenforschung als Wegbereiter eines Arbeitsbehelfs für die Praxis

At the start of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Sediment Research and Management, active fine sediment management for both hydropower plants and the maintenance of waterways had been insufficiently investigated, and clear recommendations for practice were lacking. Therefore, one of the research priorities during the seven years of the laboratory’s existence was to investigate and process the necessary range of different processes and their interactions with aquatic ecology, based on basic research, in such a way that clear recommendations for action could be formulated. In order to achieve this, case studies of active fine sediment management at hydropower plants were examined, natural and near-natural processes of fine sediment dynamics were recorded and interpreted, and the direct effect of variable durations and concentrations of suspended matter on native fish was experimentally documented for the first time. These results from the CD Laboratory will form the basis for further guidelines to be published in 2025. With this guideline, it should be possible to specifically evaluate individual projects within the respective administrative procedure and define necessary pre- and post-monitoring methods.
