Sedimentmanagement, ökologischer Zustand und Handlungsempfehlungen hinsichtlich Kleinwasserkraftanlagen in Österreich

Continuum interruptions and residual water situations caused by small hydropower plants represent significant hydromorphological impairments of watercourses in Austria, whereby possibilities and specifications for restoration measures already exist. For the hydromorphological risk of impoundments in particular, however, there is a lack of recommendations on the extent to which ecological enhancement is possible in terms of sediment dynamics. The effects of impoundments on the various biological quality elements and thus on the ecological status are already well documented, whereby the hydraulic conditions in the river bed are of decisive importance. The aim of the present study was to correlate the ecological status class with the abiotic parameters flow velocity and grain size on the basis of macrozoobenthos data from impoundments in different bioregions. The results show that a rough ecological risk assessment of impounded sections of small hydropower plants can be estimated in advance using substrate mapping and simple methods for determining flow velocity, but uncertainties in the forecast due to typological characteristics should be assessed individually.
