Pilot project on the reintroduction of aquatic macroinvertebrates: Results of a control monitoring

Three years after a project on the recolonization of aquatic invertebrates in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) a control monitoring has been performed in the recipient stream (Eselsbach) to verify which of the taxa, previously absent and purposefully transferred from the donor stream (Rotbach) established there in 2020. The control monitoring in the recipient stream was conducted using the same standardized method (NSE: natural substrate exposures) as chosen to relocate invertebrates in the pilot project 2016 and 2017. In the control experiment, the NSE were colonized by 29 taxa previously not recorded in the Eselsbach before. Among these, Polycentropus irroratus (Trichoptera) is considered as a certain reintroduction success, as this caddisfly was missing within an extended radius of the study area. Moreover, another 9 taxa are regarded as a very likely reintroduction success. This cautious differentiation results from the fact that they have been noticed within an extended radius of the study area. Nevertheless, their very low dispersal capacities indicate that a natural colonization is very unlikely. Otherwise, for another 19 new taxa, either a natural colonization cannot be excluded (12) or could not be classified (7). With regard to those taxa assessed as (very likely) reintroduction success, we consider transfer of macroinvertebrates via NSE to be a viable measure.
