The article highlights the significance of mitigation measures in the approval process of hydroelectric projects in Austria, conducted under Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) according to the UVP‑G 2000. It presents various types of environmental measures, including avoidance, minimization, and compensation measures, and explains their necessity and effectiveness. The article emphasizes the legal framework, particularly the provisions of the UVP Act and the UVE guidelines. It demonstrates that comprehensive planning and implementation of these measures are crucial to minimize environmental damage and maintain the ecological functionality. Finally, the importance of effective monitoring and a performance review is highlighted to ensure the long-term effectiveness of the measures.
