Separate collection of organic waste is crucial for environmental protection and resource conservation, contributing to various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The use of biodegradable pre-collection aids, especially those made of plastic, in households can contribute to an increase in the quantity of separately collected organic waste. However, it also poses various challenges in the treatment and utilization of organic waste. The diversity of logos for pre-collection aids complicates handling; a unified logo with clear quality criteria would be sensible. Due to their better degradability and higher methane yields paper bags could serve as more environmentally friendly alternatives to pre-collection aids made of bioplastics. Research is needed for the analysis of microplastic particles in organic waste to understand long-term environmental impacts. The effectiveness of organic waste collection could be enhanced through alternative approaches and consumer education.
