50 Jahre ICT an der TU Wien – 20 Jahre Forschungsgruppe Embedded Systems an der FH Technikum Wien

In Austria, Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) are a relatively new type of education when compared to other countries. Research and development at Austrian Universities of Applied Sciences therefore does not have such a long tradition. Furthermore, the long-term establishment of research topics, know-how and staff is difficult due to the lack of basic funding for R&D, although Universities of Applied Sciences are legally obliged to conduct research. Despite these circumstances, the research group Embedded Systems at UAS Technikum Wien has been successfully engaged in application-oriented research for over 20 years. This was made possible by publicly funded R&D projects or projects commissioned directly by industry partners, both in the field of hardware and software for embedded computing systems. Many team members are former employees of the Institute of Computer Technology at TU Wien, just to link to the focus of this issue of the e+i magazine. This article describes the development of the research group Embedded Systems at the UAS Technikum Wien from a historical perspective, outlines the focus of application-oriented research and finally gives a brief outlook on future activities.
