<p>The collaboration between universities and companies offers great potential for solving specific challenges in mining planning. This article highlights two research projects carried out in cooperation with the Montanuniversität Leoben and industry partners. While the first project optimised mining planning for a&#xa0;diabase quarry, the second project developed a&#xa0;scheduling algorithm as a&#xa0;building block for quality-controlled planning of dredging operations. Both projects demonstrate how practice-oriented research delivers innovative solutions for industry while promoting the education of the next generation of engineers.</p>
