<p>An iron sword dating from the 12th/13th&#xa0;century, found in Enzelsdorf in Styria (Austria), was examined metallographically. Two samples were taken from the blade and one sample from the tang. Due to advanced corrosion, the sword’s cutting edge was no longer present. Significantly different microstructures of the Fe-C-system were found in the metallic iron of the blade, which can be attributed to different carbon concentrations and cooling conditions.</p><p>For the sword, various pieces of iron were joined by fire welding and then forged into the sword shape. No evidence of a&#xa0;deliberate application of the Damascus technique was found. It can also be assumed that the sword blade was finally hardened by quenching.</p>
