摘要

This study presents an innovative traffic monitoring system that utilizes the existing lighting infrastructure to integrate visible light sensing (VLS) capabilities. The proposed system employs white LEDs for dual functionality, providing the necessary illumination while simultaneously sensing reflected signals from vehicles passing underneath the luminaires. The design features a unique luminaire with three LED modules, each consisting of multiple LEDs that switch between illumination and sensing states at high frequencies, ensuring an invisible and uninterrupted sensing process. Realworld test runs with various vehicles showed high accuracy in presence detection and stable, reproducible results for vehicle length estimation. The system’s non-intrusive nature and integration with existing infrastructure make it a cost-effective and efficient solution for traffic monitoring. Overall, the results achieved highlight the system’s potential for improving traffic management through light sensing approaches based on backscattered VLS and on the edge data analysis.
